Lisa Dyson of Bill Dyson Skip Hire & Waste Management came in to talk with us about what inspired her to do our Big Sleep last year, and why she’s decided to put herself forward for it again.
“I see so many people on the street and sometimes I’ve thought ‘why don’t you just go out and get work’ – I could give everyone work at our site – but some people are in such need and who am I to judge? I remember walking past someone thinking this and as I passed I saw he only had one leg. I don’t know his situation… I don’t know anyone’s situation but I still judge without knowing the full story.”
“Doing this last year really hit home; I couldn’t function whilst homeless. Getting up, getting clean, and going to work; where do you do it all? By 3am I was already dreaming about the bacon sandwich for breakfast and a hot shower.”
“What I found really striking was the eeriness; it was alright when we were all talking and having a giggle but when everyone got tired and settled down it got really quiet and I thought ‘this is real.’”
“I thought I was hallucinating it was that cold – my feet were like a box of ice. Also I normally sleep face down – imagine that; on the concrete!”
“When your back’s against the wall you need to keep your job but how can you when you’re homeless? That’s why we need a place like this, and that’s why I’ll be sleeping out on 29th November.”
